I felt this was a really good session, overlapping with a documentary illustration module. However, I felt this session consolidated a lot of what I had learnt in the documentary illustration module.
I felt that the documentary illustration model had a more political element, whereas this was just capturing life itself. And that's really interesting, because it's the stories and interactions between people that is most illuminating. Sometimes documenting the day is actually a very reflective thing to do. Learning to notice details during life is very important.
This exercise made me more observant, and made me notice people going about their day-to-day lives. This was really refreshing. I felt like a fly on the wall, drawing and illustrating and capturing everyday life as I saw it.
The tasks today were to draw other students in the studio, to draw what I had for lunch, and draw students on campus. I chose the library and the forum. There was a fashion show that day, and there were a lot of people wearing fashion pieces. I thought this was the ideal moment to capture them.
It was hard work to capture their essence as well as what they were wearing, but I did this largely successfully.
