I developed the night light into a table lamp/night light. The table lamp is in the shape of book which illuminates leading the reader into a world of imagination. I also developed the table lamp to be combined with a night light. The night light would digitally project illustrations of books onto the walls that would help aid story-telling to the book and be an immersive experience at home. Multiple illustrations could be made from different stories to immerse the audience.
Intention and Product Design
The personal struggles I faced were finding a book that I could base my illustrations on. I found it really difficult to find a book would provide suitable inspiration for the illustrations I wanted to create. In the end I chose an action fantasy novel set in imperial China. I ch0se the River of Stars by Guy Gabriel Kay.
Illustrations can be layered or illustrations can be developed into animation narrating the story and quotes from the books can be added. The digital illustrations from different books can be downloaded into the product. Associated illustrations with each book would be shown separately.
The desire for visual content is answered through the production of illustrations and invites gen z to read the next book. In addition, it would be an inclusive encouraging those who have dyslexia to be encouraged into reading through illustrations would spark the imagination of the audience.
Facilitating the product design
For Illustrations to be realised, I have google searched some archers, warriors of the imperial age in Imperial China.
My plan is to use different techniques to create these images. I am going to use printmaking techniques such as linocutting printmaking and silkscreen printmaking to create some of the images. I am going to combine these images digitally to form a digital collage. This will be the basis for the images that will form the example for immersive experience.
Analysis
I took some time in choosing a book. After some time, researching books, I was careful to choose a book that I really connected. I wanted to be inspired by the book and this would help to create ideas for illustrations. But I also knew that it had fall under the market research criteria for Gen Z, a fantasy action novel. As I read the first few chapters, I felt that this was the right book to provided the right balance between both market research and inspiration to create illustrations.
The downside of taking so long to choose a book and I did not have time to follow through all my ideas. I want to produce diverse image-making skills by using printmaking tools. I assessed that I will not have time to turn the illustrations into animation. As we do not have an animator on the team to delegate to, I felt I did not have the time develop animation skills in time. I feel that these a skills sets that I can develop over time perhaps during this summer. This will prepare me for skills for the next academic year. I have learnt that it is important to have ideas but not to always follow each ideas through. I have realised that it is important to take time to assess and plan time effectively so that I can produce tangible ideas that best visually articulate my ideas in the pesentation. That means choosing what can be reasonably be achieved as well. I chose quality over quantity, in this case creating impactful illustrations rather than illustration and animations.
These are some of my initial drawings for the illustrations that I have completed for this week.
